KRS statutes require that an individual have an academic major (or the equivalent, such as 30 hours of coursework) to teach in the related field at the middle or high school level.
-
The first year of teaching is defined as the clinical experience period rather than as a student teaching experience. Candidates are employed as a certified teacher within a classroom setting and are paid according to the district salary schedule for certified teachers. The clinical experience period is supported by an assigned mentor teacher, one school administrator, and one district administrator who will observe the teacher and provide feedback during three observational cycles. Candidates meet with the mentor teacher for a minimum of 18 hours per semester and also complete defined tasks that are recorded in the professional learning portfolio.
